Suicide - Supporting those at Risk Policy

Suicide - Supporting those at Risk Policy

Applies to: all TWG team

Overview

We acknowledge that suicide rates are a major concern in New Zealand and that some team members may contemplate suicide during their time with the Warehouse Group.

The purpose of this policy is to support and encourage team members who may be contemplating suicide to access the professional help they need without the barrier of the initial GP visit cost.

What do I do if I notice another Team member displaying self-harm behaviours?
Talk to them caringly. Ask them if they are ok in a non-judgmental way and try to understand why they were self-harming. Remove any obvious objects they were using. Encourage them to seek help and let them know about the support the company can provide. Offer to stay with them and help them to make an appointment with OCP or a GP. Look after yourself too, supporting people through these issues is not easy.

What do I do if another Team Member confides in me that they are contemplating suicide?
Take them seriously and let them know that you are a safe person for them to talk to. Encourage them to seek help and let them know about the support the company can provide. Offer to stay with them and help them to make an appointment with OCP or a GP. Look after yourself too, supporting people through these issues is not easy.

If you are really concerned that they will act on their feelings, call 111 or your local DHB Mental Health Crisis Team (CATT Team).
